Windows error message: Operating System not found - what to do?
If you get the Windows error message "Operating System not found" when you start your PC, we will show you the causes and the solution to the problem.
Windows error message "Operating System not found" - these are the most common causes
- Your BIOS may or may not recognize the hard drive.
- Your hard drive may also be defective.
- With this error message, the hard disk partition with the operating system is often damaged or there is a software error that prevents the PC from starting.
- Another cause could be a faulty or defective "master boot record". In another practical tip, we explain how to repair the master boot record.
1. Cause: Defective hard disk
- This is the most serious case. If the hard drive is defective, you have to replace it and lose all data. The operating system must also be reloaded. Check your hard drive for errors with the freeware "CheckDrive 2014".
- But there is hope: if your hard drive worked very slowly a few days earlier and made loud noises, your data may still be salvageable. It is best to contact a specialist.
2. Cause: Damaged hardware
- If you can still boot your PC, you should check your hardware for errors. To do this, open the Windows command prompt and enter "CHKDSK". This will check the hard drive for errors.
- With the free program "MemTest" you can check your RAM memory for errors.
- If your PC no longer starts up, it is only worth using an "Ultimate Boot CD". Download them from another PC and burn them to CD. Then boot your PC from the CD. We will explain how this works in another practical tip. This way you can also check your hardware for errors.
3. Cause: Malfunction in the BIOS
- Check that all hard drive cable connections are properly seated. If this is the case, check the settings in the BIOS.
- To do this, call the BIOS. You can read how to do this in this practical tip. Then switch to the "Boot" tab and make sure that the "Hard Drive" option is in the first place under "Boot Device Priority".
- If your hard drive is not listed, it may be defective.
4. Cause: Defective Master Boot Record (MBR)
Some PC knowledge is required to repair a defective master boot record. However, the problem can be solved relatively quickly:
- Start the PC as usual.
- Press the F8 key to display the alternate startup options.
- Select "Recovery Console" here. If the entry is not available, you will need the Windows CD.
- If you have opened the recovery console, enter the command "FIXMBR". Windows will now repair the master boot record.
- Note: Files may be lost. Therefore, if possible, create a backup.
- Once the repair is complete, you can start the PC normally.
What to do if no solution suggests?
- If no suggestion is successful, you should ask a specialist for help. In the best case, this can save your personal data.
- Tip: With the free software "HDD Health" you prevent potential hard disk errors.
