Stiftung Warentest: Testing electric toothbrushes
Stiftung Warentest tested 54 electric toothbrushes for children and adults. The cheapest models cost around six euros - but do they really clean their teeth? We summarize the results and show which toothbrushes are worthwhile.
Electric toothbrushes at Stiftung Warentest 2016 & 2017
- The test winner 2017 is the electric toothbrush BRaun Oral B Pro 3000 (approx. 70 euros). It cleans the teeth of food residues particularly well and has different brushing settings. Anyone who presses the toothbrush too hard on the tooth will be notified by a light signal. Grade 1.7.
- The runner-up Braun Oral B Pro 600 is significantly cheaper at around 25 euros and almost as good (grade 1.9). He also reliably cleans the teeth of all dirt.
- An electric toothbrush from Braun was also ahead in the 2016 test: the Braun Oral-B PRO 6000 SmartSeries model secured the top spot with a grade of 1.7. It offers five cleaning settings and numerous functions for checking dental care habits, praises Warentest. But that also has its price, around 125 euros are due.
Product test: Electric toothbrushes brush "well" - from just 20 euros
In the 2015 test, three toothbrushes for children secured first place: the Mickey Mouse toothbrush from Oral B, Stages Power (Oral B) and the Janosch toothbrush from Beurer. They top the ranking with a grade of 2.1 ("good").
- Mickey Mouse (Oral B): The Mickey Mouse toothbrush with good teeth cleaning is suitable for kids from 3 years. The toothbrush passed the durability test with flying colors, so it won't break quickly. Handling the toothbrush is also "good". The price is around 25 euros.
- Stages Power (Oral B): Small car fans from 5 years get their money's worth with the Stages toothbrush. The brush gets the teeth clean, also thanks to the integrated timer. However, the bust is unsuitable for travel: it has to be plugged in again after 38 minutes at the latest. The price is around 20 euros.
- Janosch (Beurer): The Janosch toothbrush for children from 7 years of age had by far the best grade for tooth cleaning (sub-grade 1.0) and ensures sparkling teeth. The integrated timer helps children to keep the cleaning time of two minutes. The price is around 30 euros.
Product test: teeth cleaning moderate to poor - the last places
- The drugstore chain DM attracts with the "Dontodent Kids Battery" for 10 euros. The inexpensive toothbrush only gets its teeth moderately clean. The testers also do not believe in a long durability of the toothbrush after their tests. There is no timer, so children can only estimate the cleaning time. Overall grade: 3.1.
- Philips Sonicare for Kids (from 4 years old) does not go beyond "sufficient". The brush is too gentle and does not clean carefully enough, according to the testers. In the more powerful mode for older children, the toothbrush is much better. Overall grade: 3.7.
- There is a separate Janosch toothbrush for kids from 4 to 7 years old, but it only cleans the teeth "poorly". In contrast to the "big brother" (test winner), it is rather a disappointment. Overall grade: 4.6
Buy battery or rechargeable toothbrushes?
The toothbrushes listed here have an integrated battery. Not only is this more environmentally friendly, it also saves your wallet.
- According to Stiftung Warentest, charging your toothbrush costs around four euros a year.
- It becomes significantly more expensive if you have to buy batteries regularly. In addition, almost empty batteries can reduce the cleaning power of the toothbrush.
