iPod Touch 6G vs. 5G - is it worth the switch?
Apple keeps the iPod family alive with the new iPod Touch 6G. But is the upgrade worth it? Who in competition iPod Touch 5G vs. 6G has the edge and what you should consider when making your purchase can be read in this practical tip.
iPod Touch 6G vs. 5G - the hardware
Once revolutionary, today on the siding. The company owes Apple's rise in recent history mainly to the iPod. Although this is becoming less and less important due to the spread of smartphones - while Apple is completely removing other models such as the iPod Classic from the range or no longer renewing models such as the iPod Shuffle, the iPod Touch is now receiving an all-round update. New colors and better hardware should make it even more competitive. But what can the sixth generation do compared to the "old" iPod Touch and is it worth switching?
- With the built-in technology, Apple cannot be ripped off. While the A5 processor was still installed in the iPod 5G, the hardware was now increased to the level of an iPhone 6, i.e. an A8 processor was used. This ensures a fast working speed, the iPod can now master the latest games again.
- Apple also worked on the storage capacity. The new iPod Touch is now also available with 128 GB. Variants with 16, 32 and 64 GB are also sold.
- However, the battery life has not really improved. For both generations, Apple has specified this with up to 40 hours of audio playback and 8 hours of video playback.
- The quality of the screen has also remained the same. A 4-inch retina display with 326 ppi will continue to be sold. But that is still absolutely sufficient for everyday use. Even demanding apps are clearly shown.
- The improved camera with 8 megapixels compared to the 5 megapixels of the old generation provides significantly better pictures, especially in a dark environment. The also improved front camera promises selfies in great quality.
- The coloring of the iPod 6G is now also based on the current iPhones. So black became space gray and gold was added. Silver is also available. Blue, pink and red (Product Red) are available as colorful variants.
Apple Music for iPod Touch 6G
The improvements in the hardware make other functions possible. And here the new iPod Touch 6G shows its true strengths compared to the iPod Touch 5G. The latest operating system runs on both iPods, i.e. iOS 8.4.1 (as of September 2015), but of course the old iPod Touch cannot keep up with the functions of the new one.
- One of the most important features of the new generation is Apple's own streaming service, Apple Music. This only works with the iPod Touch 6G. With an Apple Music subscription, you have access to over 30 million songs and can even save them offline. We'll show you how to use Apple Music offline in another practical tip.
- For € 229, that is the cost of the 16 GB version of the iPod Touch 6G, you already have the opportunity to use the streaming service. So it doesn't necessarily have to be the expensive iPhone. The prices of the other memory variants are quite high for an MP3 player, so the 128 GB version costs € 449.
- Nevertheless, the device also convinces thanks to numerous additional functions and access to the App Store. If you already own the 5G model, it is rather questionable whether the update is worthwhile. Above all, it probably depends on whether you want to use Apple Music or whether you play your own MP3s. Then the old model is certainly still sufficient.
